February/March
Winter/Spring Edition
Please see important payment information below.
Dear CSA Members,
|
Welcome back friends from 2009, and welcome aboard new growing partners
for 2010. The new year was starting to look a lot like the last in terms of
precipitation--it was just a lot colder this time around! The wet, cold, and
freezing weather has caused some worry about early planting, but it is
also likely to kill many pest insects and diseases in the soil. Our
main seed orders have arrived and if there is any surface in my home not covered
with seed packets, those areas are surely occupied by sprouting
seedlings. In the greenhouse as well as my house we've got several
thousand sprouting plants, including broccoli, kale, lettuce, storage
onions, green onions, leeks, cabbage, kohlrabi, and so on.
  [onions, kale, and broccoli]
Since May 1 we have transplanted or planted the following (drum roll): over 4,000 red, white, and yellow onions, 400' of green onion sets, 600' of spinach, 800' of sugar snap and snow peas, 250 broccoli plants, lacinado kale, beets, carrots, potatoes (3/4 acre), broccoli raab, arugula, lettuce, cilantro, parsley, and more! We were able to get in our first planting of beets and carrots (480' of each--with 7 varieties) right before the heavy rains, which meant planting until 9:30pm--not preferable, but quite satisfying the following morning.
Between these small patches of clear skies, drying fields, and the all-out scramble to get our earliest plants growing, we've also been taking on a few new projects (yes, we're crazy). New projects for 2010 include a medicinal herb/flower garden, drip irrigation from a 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system (summer crop insurance), and a
30' x 120' greenhouse for cold weather growing (much less early-spring stress!) We'll even be growing
a hop yard for local micro-brewery, Yazoo (homebrewers, talk to me).
[rainbow at the farm, baby "reds sails" lettuce, and long rows of garlic, onions, peas, etc]
There has been quite a bit going on, but I'll keep this newsletter short so we can get to the payment details! Overall, I think we're off to a great, early start, and are heading towards another great season.
Lastly, Thank You for joining early this season! We
accepted 60 members and reached our mark in mid February, which was much
sooner than expected. We already have a waiting list of 20 that is growing each day!
Your farmers,
(Eric, Brooke, George, Dan, and more!)
